The normal of yang phrase of menstrual cycle accordingly to traditional Chinese medicine can not be shorter then 10 days. But for what ever reason, some women experience the luteal phrase defect because of excess heat leading to infertility.

In traditional Chinese medicine, qi is defined as a substance contains properties of motion and invisibility. It comes from 3 sources
1. Primordial qi ( Heredity)
2. Inhaled qi ( Air inhaled by lung)
3. Qi essence (Absorbed from food by spleen)

I. Symptoms of qi deficiency
1. Shortness of breath
2. Fatigue, loose stools
3. Dizziness,
4. Pale face,
5. Weakened voice/reluctance to speak,
6. Sweating with little exertion
7. Loose stool
8. Etc.

II. Causes of qi deficiency
1. Stomach abnormal function
Stomach is important to digest food when it enter the body. If stomach qi is deficiency or can not digestive food properly due to intake of raw foods or cold foods, etc. for a prolonged period of time, it will cause less qi to be converted, resulting in lessening the function of spleen in qi formation and distribution.

2. Spleen
After food is digested by the stomach, food qi and essences are absorbed by spleen. Intake of certain food and weakened parental qi will cause spleen qi deficiency that leads to not enough qi to perform its function in assisting liver and lung in qi distribution to the body.

3. Lung
Lung move qi in lung channels, if for what ever reason, lung is damaged due to smokes, diseases, etc. It can not perform its function in combining the qi from the spleen and inhaled qi from the air to move blood and fluids to the abdomen.

Ren shen is considered as one of most powerful herbs in strengthening the original qi in the body. Besides improving the spleen function in qi absorption, thus reducing the symptoms of distended chest and abdomen cramps and pain, it also enhances the lung qi by moistening the channels.

2. Xi yang shen (American ginseng)
Besides promoting the lung and spleen qi, it also increases the digestive system in absorbing vital energy and reducing the heat causes of qi stagnation by moistening the all qi transportation channels.

3. Dang shen (Pilose asiabell root)

In Traditional Chinese medicine, when the egg is extruded into fallopian tube, liver transform yin energy to yang that triggers the yang ( progesterone) phrase. At this phrase, blood and qi move down ward, the uterus lining becomes softer in preparing for the implantation of the fertilized egg, if occurs. In conventional medicine, at this phrase corpus luteum starts to produce progesterone that triggers the softening of uterus lining for fertilized egg implantation.

I. Causes
1. Yang deficiency
a) Kidney yang deficiency
Although yang is sub-dominant in the yin phrase, it is also required to balance the dominant yin in production of the follicles, if for what ever reason yang is too weak, it will causes ovaries do not respond well to the FSH, leading to inadequate follicle development, resulting in poor follicle formation or corpus luteum does not persist as long as it should or the uterine lining failure to develop properly.

b) Liver qi deficiency
Since liver in responsible for the transformation of yin phrase to the yang phrase, if liver qi is deficient caused by yang deficiency, it may interfere with liver qi in moving blood to the uterus, leading to not enough blood to ensure the development of the uterus lining for egg implantation.

2. Spleen qi deficiency
Spleen is vital distribution of food qi and essence to kidney in maintaining a normal menstrual cycle. If for what ever reason ( prolonged in take of cold and raw food, working in cold environment or drinking or eating a lot of artificial ingredient), spleen fails to provide enough yang for the kidney and liver to maintain the normal menstrual phrase, they may also fail to do their job in providing the suitable environment for uterus lining in egg implantation.

4. For Spleen qi deficiency
a) Ren shen (Ginseng)
It is one of most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine in strongly tonify original qi, lung and spleen qi and in case of extreme Qi deficiency by tonifying lung and spleen channels.

b) Huang qi (Astragalus)
huang qi is one of the herb used in tonifying spleen and lung by raising the spleen qi and strengthening the lung downward movement.
