Black cohosh also known as Actaea racemosa and Cimicifuga racemosa, a member of the buttercup family, is a perennial plant that is native to North America. Black cohosh are used chiefly to treat symptoms associated with menopause, it is one of the most popular herbal remedies for hot flashes, night sweats, migraines, mood disturbances, heart palpitations and vaginal dryness.

A number of studies have been conducted to determine whether black cohosh affects menopausal symptoms. Few were placebo-controlled studies, and most assessed symptoms by using the Kupperman index, a scale that combines measures of hot flashes, insomnia, and depression but not vaginal dryness.

Since black cohosh helps to inhibit the levels of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream, it also helps to improve the liver function in regulating the hormones of the prostaglandins family resulting in reducing the risk of premenstrual pain and cramps caused by over-production of certain hormones in the prostaglandins family.

Besides helping to inhibit the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood and regulate the abnormal cell growth, its phytochemical agents also help to raise the levels of estrogen. If it is too low and increases levels of estrogen, it results in decreasing the risk of hormone imbalance between levels of estrogen and progesterone before and after ovulation.

Fukinolic acid in the black cohosh is said to help in improve the body’s functions in inhibiting the levels of bad estrogen caused by environmental toxins or unhealthy diet that are high in saturated fat and transfat, caffeine, and other stimulants thereby reducing the risk of hormone imbalance for some women with PMS. Also, Black cohosh contain natural alpha, beta, delta 3 carene, sabinene, and among others which has been used in traditional medicine in liver detoxification thereby increasing the liver’s fat and protein metabolism resulting in lessening the nervous tension including emotional and physical stress including depression and anxiety.

It is also said that the chemical agent caffeine and isoferrulic acids present in Black cohosh help to improve the immune system in fighting against the forming of free radicals and abnormal cell growth, thereby decreasing the risk of reproductive system infection and inflammation.

There are many known side-effects with the use of Black cohosh. People with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as cancer of the breast, prostate, ovaries or uterus, endometriosis or uterine fibroids, should avoid black cohosh until more is known about how it works and whether it has a hormonal effect. Because it may act like the hormone estrogen in the body, black cohosh could interfere with hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives. Since black cohosh also contains toxic agents, overdose is a danger to your health. It is always advised to consult with your doctor before taking in any form of this plant.
